Is Your Printer Spying on You?

The Electronic Frontier Foundation is an organization that works to
protect your digital rights. The EFF continues to champion the public
interest in cutting-edge issues of free speech, privacy, innovation,
and consumer rights. About a year ago it was revealed that several
printer companies were quietly encoding the serial number and
manufacturing code of their color laser printers and color copiers on
every document those machines produce, ostensibly to combat
counterfeiting. The codes are invisible to the naked eye, but with
the help of a blue LED and a microscope you can see the yellow dots
on the page.

The EFF set about to try to decode those dots and discovered how to
read the date, time, and printer serial number from the codes. There
are pictures of the codes and their analysis at:

On its web site the EFF has published a list of the printers that do
and do not print tracking dots:

My only questions: Are they the real killers? Maybe terrorists?
